Don't eat the Daisies!!

Frankie Furter (Mayor of Blogville), has given me my first assignment as Secretary of Agriculture!

With the gardening season approaching, now is a good time to evaluate the toxicity of your indoor and outdoor plants.

Remember the Doris Day song, 'Don't eat the daisies'.  Well, maybe you don't know the song, but it was good advice for dogs! The lyrics should have also included, Sago Palms, Lilies, Ferns and a long list of houseplants and outdoor plants. If you have a pup (or cat), like me, that likes to explore the world with the mouth open, keep us away from these things. After reviewing the list of 455 plants, we discover that we own most of them!

Aspca's list of toxic plants

...And remember, it is not just plants that can kill. Dogster lists other household concerns, like human medication, rat poison and herbicides to name a few.

Dogster's 10 pet toxins of 2010

Last year, about this time, I spent the night at the emergency vet, because I ate some unknown toxin.
It was no good :(
Bark of the Day:  CAUTION
Happy Gardening and Digging (just don't eat the plants!)

  2. I really wished dat da nurseries and all da places dat sell plants (all plants) would put a tag on da plants dey sell saying whether they are toxic or not to pets (and kids too). Mom wishes someone would pass a law to make this happen.

  3. Honorable Secretary of Agriculture of all of Blog land, Sir, we are wondering what the proper way to adress you now that you hold such an esteemed title.

You do realize, I am sure, that you must set an example for the rest of us. Oops! Nevermind! This isn't human politics! Carry on!

    Happy tails!

  4. You are the perfect Secretary of Agriculture, Wyatt! That was a good list of "plants-not-to-eat". Now, what are good plants TO eat? I know Mom is not happy when I pull up her onions, but I don't eat them. They taste icky.....

  8. Oh thank you!!!! We didn't know all of that stuff was on the list. They try and keep me away from stuff all the time and my mom's not afraid to pull stuff out of my mouth if I get into something. Now if I could just stop trying to lick the hand lotion off of her I'd be all set!!

  9. Ciara likes to eat EVERYTHING!!! So the Momster thinks we will have no plants on the deck or in the yard again this year. She had gotten a beautiful Angel Trumpet last year for the back deck when Fenris' mom told her it is poisonous to pups. So she had to move it to the front. She wishes she knew a good trick to stop the Pest from eating her plants:(

Great post - good reminder for all.

  11. I like to chomp on all sorts of stuff - but my mum keeps a pretty close eye on me - she thinks it's scary to realise how many plants around us are toxic. Thanks for the info - hope that caution tape won't hurt when it comes off!! Tail Wuggles, Rubie.

  22. Hi ya Wyatt! As you mentioned the plants and there are a lot we shouldn't have around us, I thought I'd mention a database you can search for (with photos) good and bad plants to have around doggies. There's one for cats and horsies too :) It's on the ASPCA website. There's a link on my blog under Roo's Links, second link down.

Maybe you could add the link to the database to your website too?

    Waggin at ya,
    Roo

  23. Thanks for all the info, Wyatt!! We're going to check out those links. Riley likes to eat grass and dig, so I'm sure she'd like to eat some plants if she had access to them.

Riley has spent time at the emergency vet for eating some of my medication before...luckily it ended up to be nothing serious!!
