Dandelions got you down?
This week's gardening question comes from Goose.
After you stop at Mr. Pip's you could come on over to Utah and lend a hand. MOM is having a terrible time with dandelions. Yes she put on the fertilizer and pr-emergent. But still they keep popping up. I have no idea how to help her (except to dig them). What would you do?
Blessings, Goose
Well Goose. Dandelions and all broad leafed weeds can be eradicated with herbicides....
Most weed and feeds for lawn or just weed killers for lawn, have the herbicide 2,4-D which is highly effective for broad leaf weeds like dandelions and clover. Remember that pre-emergents are for killing seeds that have not sprouted yet (like in your flowerbeds), but post emergents are for killing existing weeds, so make sure you are using the right stuff.
But, if you are like us and trying to keep your yard chemical free...what to do?
These weeds look like dandelions, but are called "Cats Ears"!
Some lawn weeds can be dug out. But most lawn weeds have those long carrot like roots...DRAT!
There are organic lawn weed and feeds on the market. Most use chelated iron as the active ingredient. (Lawn Weed Killer from Whitney Farms or Iron X from Gardens Alive)
If you don't have too many dandelions. Try taking out the boiling tea kettle and pouring hot water on each dandelion. If you keep that up..they will probably die..hee hee!
If all else fails, embrace the weeds and call it "Fleur de Lawn".
It's all the rage in Oregon!!
Happy Weeding!
Wyatt
Wyatt! You are so smart!!! You could give gardening classes!! We especially love that you have show and tell...we love looking at your smiling face along with all of the important information about weeds and stuff!! We will show this to mama so that she knows how to kill the DanDEELIONS!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
ReplyDeleteWoof! Woof! LOVE your photos. Golden Thanks for sharing about Weeding. We don't have to worry about that here. Our yard is a bit different for sure your peeps will love it. We got a farm of Flowers. We will share soon and do a blog post. Lots of Golden ALOHA n Woofs, Sugar
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had much trouble with dandelions, because everytime a flower comes out, SHE pulls it off. It never has a chance to seed.
ReplyDeleteHowever, we have the most annoying burrs that have to be dug out, poisoned...probably shot. They just keep coming up and getting in our paws and fur. We with we only had problems with dandelions.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
That's a LOT to weed out!

You look very handsome in your meadow of dandelions, Wyatt!
ReplyDeleteMy mom pokes the huge one out with one of those forked tools.
Love ya lots,
Mitch
Great photos of you in the dandelion field Wyatt. My peeps try and dig them out and if they can't well you can try and love them as you say :) woofs and licks from Magic xx
ReplyDeleteNice blog!

We don't seem to get too many dandelions in our yard, just one or two here and there. But, oh the hill behind us is blanketed in them. The house has been empty for a couple of years now. Someone bought it and is doing a lot of inside renovation, but please, let's get that lawn under control.
ReplyDeleteDandelions are pretty in bloom but quite unsightedly when they start to die off.
Thanks for the great info,Wyatt.

very nice blog...nice pictures...
ReplyDeleteGreat advice Wyatt. We are lucky to have our dandy lions under control for the most part.

Thanks Wyatt. I think the MOM put the wrong stuff on with the pre-emergent. I like the boiling water idea, but with a 1/2 acre of yard that would be a lot of boiling. So we will live with the hundreds of the things, or get the right stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks again you garden master you.
Blessings,
Goose
It be a real shame you can't just pee on 'em! And it would be toxic and chemical free too...hehehe.
ReplyDeleteI is gonna email you withs my question soon.
Puddles
We have dandelions, too. My mom doesn't mind them, but my silly papa is obsessing over them. Maybe we will try the boiling water trick.
ReplyDeleteYour pal, Pip
We don't have very many dandy lions butt we have weeds dat bite if you step on dem! Think I'd rather have dandy lions!
ReplyDeleteWhen Angel Pretzel was alive... SHE dug up EVERY SINGLE Dandy Lion that she ever found. EVERYBUDDY wanted her to come visit them so that she would WORK their Yard Over and make it Dandy Lion Free.
ReplyDeleteNow I have a question... What are your feelings about spreading used Coffee Grounds in gardens and put around Acid Loving thingys like Azaleas and BLUEBERRIES?
I don't know if you have White Castle hamburger places near you... butt all the ones here in OHIO will actually SAVE all their coffee grounds fur their customers.
My MOM puts ALL of ours in a Bucket and then scatters them over the garden when the bucket gets full.
We have had to make compromises for the dog's safety since they eat everything.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any dandelion in our house nor see much of that flower around here but it is such a beautiful flower :)
ReplyDeleteLove,
Autumn & Jasmine
The header phpto is beautiful...we've been to Willamette Valley this time of year, amazing! We're headed out your way in a couple of weeks...headed to OR coast, again...we love it!

We have "Fleur de Lawn" here in VA! Our yard is a nightmare...weeds everywhere. I think we actually have more weeds than grass. It's a never ending job to get rid of all the weeds in just our flowerbeds, much less our front and back yards! Sigh.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, Wyatt!
