The seed catalogs are arriving.
We study and plan and ponder....
How come some vegetables get "no respect"?
So it goes, for the root vegetables, Rutabagas, Parsnips and Turnips.
Not every vegetable can be the Glamorous French Green Been or the Lovely Heirloom Tomato.
Ugly veggies need love too!
When was the last time you tried one of these?
We cooked a roast last weekend and added these 3 in the mix, with a few carrots and potatoes.
Winner Winner! For two leggers and four leggers!
We will be ordering extra root vegetables this year.
Or, I could just eat this page...

MOM and I love root veggies. Not ugly at all. We think they are beautiful and tasty.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Goose
I think I eat root veggies in my food, but it's hard to tell since it's all mushed up. You have such a green thumb Wyatt.
ReplyDeleteMillie
I'm not really one for vegies... ick. But my peep LOVES them!
ReplyDeleteDon't like the parsnips...but the turnips are good.
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Oh Wyatt, Ma just LOVES the rutabagas!!! She makes them for our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners...Yummers!!
ReplyDeleteI, myself, am a BIG fan of the potato. Oh, yeah! Any kind! Love em' all! Any other veggies (except lettuce and tomatoes) YUCK! To them, I would rather eat that catalog page! BOL Dig on.
Kisses,
Ruby
Gosh, turnips and parsnips - you might as well be in Scotland.
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
PS from Gail - a few years ago, in a fit of 'green-ness' I made a New Year Resolution to get a weekly veggie box from a local organic farmer. And learned quickly about the limited range of fresh locally grown vegetables available in NE Scotland in January and February. After two months of unremitting turnips, parsnips, swedes, onions, potatoes and carrots, I reverted to the supermarket and increased food miles I'm afraid!
We have actually been eating lots more veggies lately...mama has been putting in cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, green beans, peas...but we have not yet tried those root things. We will mention it to her ... perhaps we can try them...if you say they are good! You are an expert at these things Wyatt!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug
ReplyDeleteWe are planning our sowing too. Paws crossed we have a better year than the last one. Love it....ugly veggies need love too. Have a super Saturday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Momz has tried all of these in her cooking but truth is we can't always find them in our local markets...I wonder if it's because they don't grow that well in our climate zone?
ReplyDeleteWoof! Woof! Can't wait to see your vegetable garden ... Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
ReplyDeleteOur mom likes raw turnips BETTER than radishes...
ReplyDeleteMom uses these all the time - she loves them and majes cornish pasties with them. Did you know Rutabagas and called Swedes in the rest of the world. Well at least in Australia and England - that is all mom has ever known them as - Rutabagas and Potatoes mashed together with butter salt and pepper is the BEST
ReplyDeleteI put root veggies in soups and stews sometimes, but I don't like them!
ReplyDeleteWyatt, We like that you are an equal opportunity veggie eater!
ReplyDeleteMom was in Giant supermarket today and saw a gentlemen pick up a turnip....Mom thought who the heck eats those and how do they cook them?...haha and here you are singing their praises.
We'll have to check them out.
Violet - the non vegetable eater..BOL!
Howdy Wyatt, our angel Nana always used 'ugly' vegetables in soup. It was always a winner and mum loved them. Butt.... she doesn't use them much herself now! NO worries, and love, Stella and Rory
ReplyDeleteMy Momma is quite fond of parsnips as am I.
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Dexter
Our mom is a HUGE fan of parsnips and we've had turnips and rutabagas and they're yummy!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots
Mitch and Molly

ReplyDeleteI haven't tried parsnips, look good though:-)
ReplyDeleteWe plan to grow lots of root veggies
