One of the elements we like to include in our landscapes for our clients, "Year Around Interest".
We make sure, that when the summer blooms fade and the leaves fall, their outdoor space is still inviting.
Here in Western Oregon, USDA zone 8, we are fortunate to have a temperate climate.
Many Sasanqua Camellia varieties bloom from fall to early spring.
Trees and shrubs with colorful or peeling bark, make a winter garden interesting.
One of our favorites, Arbutus Unedo
"Compact Strawberry Bush".
Beauty Berry
This shrub is hardy to USDA zone 5 and provides neon purple berries in the fall!
Many perennials like 'Autumn Joy' Sedum and Ornamental Grass Miscanthus
have displays that last well beyond the first frost.
Tell us about your outdoor plants that look nice in the fall and winter!?!?
Another winter trick tip up our furry sleeves, that gives SO much joy in the dead of winter is outdoor lighting.
We will bark at you later on that subject. It's easier than you think!

We are wondering what USDA zone equates to Aberdeen (NE Scotland)? We know it's the coldest bit of the UK!
ReplyDeleteOver at our cottage in Torridon in NW Scotland, a bit further north than Aberdeen but milder in winter due to the Gulf Stream, we have a lovely shrub rose still providing a splash of delicate pale pink well into November.
Cheers, Gail and Bertie
Nothing really great in our garden in Winter. It is kind of boring unlike yours which looks great. Wish we had more time as you inspire us to do something better. Have a terrific Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Your flowers and plants are absolutely beautiful!! Perhaps we should have mama consider moving there?? Not much happening around here right now except snow and blowing snow and icy cold weather! Yuck. Happy Tuesday Wyatt!! xo Chloe and LadyBug
ReplyDeleteWe love seeing all of your plants, Wyatt, but our mom is totally gaga over your beauty berry! It's just stunning!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots♥

What beautiful plants. Lady knows nothing about gardening so can't answer your questions. She doesn't think there is much in the dead of winter to enjoy. Lee and Phod
ReplyDeleteOMD your BEAUTY BERRIES are gorgeous... We wish we had one of those. We HEAR that they make good JELLY.
ReplyDeleteOh the paperbark maple looks wonderful, that's the perfect plant for me, for the paperBARK hehe. We have two camellia trees too, but we have to wait a while till they have blossoms. We sadly have no green thumbs just two left feet :o)
ReplyDeletePretty. It looks like a tulip. Mom is so interested on that strawberry bush. Happy Fall Gardening. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
ReplyDeleteYou should be in Home and Garden magazine. Those purple berries are beautiful

Wish we had all that fantastic stuff, all we gots, is dormant grass, deaded weeds and empty tress, but we still gots our colorful animal farm around us, and getting ready for Christmas lights to go up!
ReplyDeleteThe Mad Scots
We are more limited up here. I have some tall variegated grasses but most everything gets covered in snow anyhow. We got 6 inches this weekend and it's 13 degrees out now.
ReplyDeleteAll of those look fantastic but our fave are the Beauty Berries. Here in the UK it rains so hard that try as you might everything will end up looking hazy and miserable. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you will get different shades on brown, not just mud brown!
ReplyDeleteDina
We have a mix of evergreens with our shrubs plus some plants with red stems to give some winter interest.
ReplyDeleteMillie & Walter
Those neon berries were beautiful. The plants at our house look dead. Sometimes they are dead looking with snow on them and that looks beautiful but mostly they look dead.

Ooooo! I'm thinking we really need some Beauty Berries here! That is gorgeous!

Oh MY Dog, your autumn garden is wonderful. What beautiful colours. We're lucky here in Oz our eucalyptus trees are green all year round and we love our winter because it stays green even when it is so cold (well here in our part of Sth Australia). Thanks for sharing. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE those purple berries and flowers/grasses. Wonder if they would grow in N.Idaho's zone 4? In Phoenix just about everything grows here. Daddy takes us for lonnnnng walks so we see all kinds of desert plants and also flowers. Though our allergies are really bad down here, we enjoy going out with our pop.
