Home improvements always bring surprises...some good, some bat.
Bats have always been around our hood.
We love them, they eat lots of bugs.
And they love us too, we built them a bat house, but they want to live with us.
They keep turning up in our roofing project. We have the perfect bat environment. Lots of organic green space, a warm cozy log house, cozy roof and a pond with insects.
The bats have worked their way between the roof on the outside and the tongue and groove on the inside. During recent construction, one bat found it's way into our living space a few nights ago and sent us all screaming like little school girls! It didn't help that it was at midnight and there was thunder and lightning on the same night.....scary movie time!
SO,
We are working on bat exclusion with the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.
Many species of bats are protected by state law.
We might have Little Brown Myotis or California Myotis? Whatever the species, they are having babies now and would like to have their maternity ward under our roof. Okay, we can deal with that.
One of our renters, did not survive the construction.
He looks scary and menacing, but he was little and wounded. RIP little fella.
See more about bats here.
The Blogville Halloween Party is here!
We have all the decorations in place...Ha

I just love love how kind you are to the bats. I like them too. Not sure I would want them living inside with me. But they can hang at my house anytime they want.

Goose

Hee hee! I can just imagine the chaos that would happen here if a bat got in our house! All I can say is that it would probably look a lot like "The Great Outdoors"!
ReplyDeleteBunny
yikes that bat!! This one is talking Halloween too
ReplyDeleteBenny & Lily
I would be screaming like a school girl too if a bat was flying around inside my house. We have bats living outside somewhere (I don't know where they hide during the day) and most evenings I can see them starting their work around dusk.
ReplyDeleteCindy
My coworker had a bat in her apartment this past Friday night. She and her fiance managed to herd it outside (I think they used a spray water bottle?) and haven't seen it since. They're praying they don't have a repeat performance.
ReplyDeleteOh such fun, a bat in the house, what an especially thrilling new toy.
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
Totally love that house!!! The bat...not so much!! Well...we have them at our cottage too...and mama says they are good for the insects so we are supposed to stay away! BOL!!! That comment about Halloween is FUNNY!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug

ReplyDeleteSam
EEEKS....Sounds like an episode of the old "Dark Shadows" television program from the 60's.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny - Mom was just reading about bats yesterday - we live in a rice growing area so there is HUGE mosquito problems here because of all the flooded fields and Mom read bats can eat up to 300 mosquito a night - she is looking at putting up some bat roosts as well
ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard that Moth Balls will keep birds from nesting in places you don't want than to??? Maybe it would work fur BATS...
ReplyDeleteI think bats are cool. We have a few around our hill and we like to see them fly at night.
Hey Wyatt!
ReplyDeleteWow, bats are totally pawesome! My pack loves them. We like to leave our deck lights on at night, then watch them swoop in for all of the bugs! Love the bat house idea. I may have to see about getting Dad to build one.
Grr and Woof,
Sarge, COP
I like the idea of the bat house. I like bats but not in the house though and definately not during a thunder storm.
ReplyDeleteSheba.
We know that bats are good to have around for insect control, but we are absolutely pawsitive that our Mom would totally freak out if one got in the house. If they were under the roof and she didn't know, that would proabably be OK:)
ReplyDeleteSo what time does the Halloween party start?
Woos - Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
Oh gads, is that your white living room carpet? Yikees
ReplyDeleteWe love bats. One of dad's favorite places is Carlsbad Caverns for the evening bat fly-out when thousands come out to hunt. The funny thing is that we don't have any here in Albuquerque, but momma and dad were plagued by one or two every year getting inside when they lived in downtown Chicago!
ReplyDeleteI love bats, we have them flit around our house and me and Mum sit on the patio and watch them in the warm evenings at dusk! Oh the Poor dead bat :(
ReplyDeletesuch a wonderful place, its beautiful!
Love, Licks and Hugs from your furiend Frank xxxxxxx
Well, as home improvements go, this is one for the books!
ReplyDeleteOh I bet that was quite the evening with bats dive bombing you. BOL! Baby bats? Awwwwwww :)
