Bottles and Cans

Here in Oregon, we pay a bottle deposit of 5 cents, for every bottle and can of soda, beer, juice drinks and water.
Then, we would take our emptys back to the grocery store to be redeemed.

Our town of Oregon City, started a pilot project several months ago.
The grocery stores in O.C. no longer take our bottles and cans.
We have a new facility, where you open an account to redeem your bottles and cans. You get special bags and an account card.
"Hurry up mom! You said we were going to the park!!"
"I already asked...NO, they don't take the ice tea bottles!"
"Somedays it's hard to be green...."

  1. You are SO right Wyatt. Sometimes it's not easy being green.
But I think your town has the light at the dog park that accepts poop right? So one step forward, one step....sideways?

You are such a good helper!

  5. Oh that sure does sound like a pawsome idea Wyatt. But it will be a LONG time before it comes to Grants Pass or Medford, heck we don't even have a Trader Joes! Now THAT is TERRIBLE!

  6. At least you have a program there - here we can recycle cans and plastic at the curb, but no glass. Seems like a waste when there are so many good things that could be done with the glass. Mom is still trying to figure out how there is any benefit to this recycling if the collectors just dump all the newspapers, cardboard, cans, and plastic bottles into the same dumpster - why do we bother to sort it? OK, enough of our rant. So did you get to the park eventually, Wyatt?

  7. Hi Wyatt,

We have a 10 cents refund system on drink cans, bottles and some flavoured milk cartons in our state. It works really well with a huge reduction of litter and waste tossed. The other states of Australia think it's wonderful, but the pawliticions are draggin' their paws about introducing it all round.

The dog park was nice I take it??

  9. We have several recycling depots that we have to take our bottles and cans to. They make you pack the out onto flats and remove the tabs from the cns and the lids from the bottles. YEESH! It ain't easy being green. The Mama being someone lazy and reluctant to do all that work, the Mama saves ours and donates them to our local animal shelter. They have a bottle drive every month and their youth volunteers help sort and stack all the recyclables!

  10. Hi Wyatt, we are in the same state as Rubie and the 10 cent refund really helped with litter. We recycle all our things. To answer the OP Pack, I think when the dumpster goes to the recycling plant, they have massive conveyer belts that sort all the trash into separate sections. Mum saw it on TV and it was amazing how it all worked. We just put all our recycle stuff together in the one bin (as suggested by Council) and then it is sorted at recycle centre. Ok enough from us. Have a great day. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory.

  11. Oh what confusion that would cause for our Momster, she doesn't do machinery well, even the parking meters never like her money ;-) Great idea though, ours put out lots of glass for recycling every week, we have so many recycling tubs now we need a list! Have a great week Wyatt, xxx

  13. You're doing a good job there Wyatt! I don't think we have any refund systems here in Yorkshire but we do have good recycling collections for glass, cans, plastic, paper, cardboard, garden waste etc every 2 weeks from the house. A big lorry comes and takes it all away but we do have to sort it into different boxes so we have 3 boxes and 2 wheelie bins for all the different things! It can be hard work being green but worth it for the planet :- ) love from Magic x

  18. Good job, Wyatt! But, you're so right - sometimes it is hard to be green :) We have a local store that gives you the stink eye if you don't bring your own grocery bag, but puts everything in plastic containers that can't be recycled by our county recycle program. What's up with that?

  19. It seems like it would be a pain to have to go somewhere besides the grocery store to return them. You're doing a great job supervising!
